The Telegram application gained more than 70 million new users on Monday, thanks to a six-hour blockade on Facebook and messaging services such as WocAp, Instagram and Messenger, its founder, Pavel Durov, said on Tuesday.

Facebook attributes the blockade to a “wrong configuration change”, which prevented 3.5 billion of their users from accessing the services of WocApa Instagram and Messenger. The problem caused the global system to crash for more than six hours.

‘The daily growth rate of Telegram exceeded all expectations. “We have welcomed refugees from other platforms, more than 70 million of them in one day,” Durov wrote on his Telegram channel.

He added that some users in North and South America may have experienced minor issues because millions of people rushed to Telegram, an application to send text and multimedia messages on Android, iOS and Windows devices at the same time, but the service usually works well for most users.

Russia said the incident showed that Moscow was right when it developed its own sovereign Internet platforms and social networks.
